Full Cost Breakdown
Fees are rarely the biggest number
Tuition draws the attention, but in most countries living costs over three or four years exceed it — and in systems where tuition is low or free, living costs are essentially the whole bill. Accommodation is the single largest line in almost every case, and it is the one most affected by the choice of institution and city.
That choice is the real lever. Two courses with identical fees can differ by a large multiple in total cost depending on where they are and whether living at home is possible.
Why inflating the cost matters so much
Education costs have generally risen faster than general inflation for decades. Over the eighteen years between a birth and a first term, a few points of difference compounds into a very large gap — which is why the inflation assumption above changes the answer more than most people expect, and why planning against today's prices understates the target badly.
It cuts the other way too: the same eighteen years is long enough for invested savings to do most of the work, provided they start early. Starting at birth rather than at ten roughly halves the monthly amount required.
You do not need to fund all of it
A common mistake is treating the full projected cost as a savings target. In practice the bill is usually met from several places at once:
- Income during the course. Term-time and vacation work covers a meaningful share of living costs for many students.
- Grants, bursaries and scholarships, which are means-tested in most systems and frequently under-claimed.
- Student loans, whose terms vary enormously. Income-contingent systems where the debt is written off after a set period behave far more like a graduate tax than a conventional loan, and treating them as ordinary debt leads to over-saving.
- Contributions from family across more than one generation, which is common and often tax-advantaged.
Aiming to cover a realistic share — often half to two-thirds — is a sounder target than the full projected figure.
Where to hold the money
Most countries offer some tax-advantaged route for education saving, and the rules differ on what happens if the money is not used for education. Check the penalty for non-qualifying withdrawals before committing to a dedicated account, because a child who does not attend, wins a scholarship, or studies somewhere cheaper is a good outcome that some account types punish.
On horizon: money needed in fifteen years can sit largely in equities; money needed in two should not. Shifting gradually towards cash as the first term approaches avoids the worst case, which is a market fall in the year the fees are due.

What changes in Canada
- Canadian tuition is low by North American standards and the difference between in-province, out-of-province and international rates is large — for domestic students, living costs usually exceed tuition.
- The federal portion of Canada Student Loans has been interest-free since 2023, which changes the maths of repaying early: there is often no reason to rush the federal part. Provincial portions still vary.
- An RESP attracts the Canada Education Savings Grant — a 20% match on the first $2,500 contributed each year, worth up to $500 annually and $7,200 in a lifetime. It is the highest guaranteed return available to a Canadian family and unused room carries forward only partially.
- RESP withdrawals of grant and growth are taxed in the student hands, usually at or near zero. Contributions come back tax-free. Sequencing the withdrawal correctly is worth real money.
