Why a one-off increase is not one-off

The figure above is large because a starting salary is the base everything else is calculated from. Percentage rises compound on it, bonuses are usually a percentage of it, pension contributions are a percentage of it, and the next employer will ask what it is.

So a difference at hire does not stay that size — it widens every year. That is also why the same negotiation is worth substantially more early in a career than late: there are more years for it to compound over.

What actually moves an offer

  • A specific, sourced number. A range from published pay data or a legally required range in a job posting is far harder to dismiss than a general sense of being underpaid.
  • Timing. The leverage is highest after an offer and before acceptance. It falls sharply afterwards.
  • What the increase costs them. A few thousand on a salary is small against the cost of restarting a hiring process that has already run for months.
  • Everything that is not base pay. Where the salary band is genuinely fixed, signing bonus, equity, holiday, title, review date and remote arrangements are often not.

On the risk of asking

Offers are very rarely withdrawn over a polite, reasoned counter — employers generally expect one, and many leave room for it. The more common outcome by a wide margin is accepting a first offer that had room in it.

Two things make a counter easy to say yes to: name a figure rather than asking what is possible, and give the reason alongside it. "Based on the published range for this role and my experience with X, I was targeting Y" is a different conversation from "is there any flexibility".

What this model simplifies

It assumes steady percentage rises and continuous employment, which is smoother than most careers. Career breaks, job changes and promotions all move the line, generally by more than the negotiation itself — a change of employer is usually the largest single pay increase most people ever get.

It also works in gross pay. What reaches you depends on tax bands, and where a rise crosses a threshold, the net gain is smaller than the gross one.

What changes in Australia

  • Confirm whether an advertised figure is a base salary or a package including superannuation — a 12% difference in how the same number is quoted is the most common source of confusion in Australian offers.
  • Salary sacrifice into super is taxed at 15% instead of your marginal rate, so for higher earners it is usually worth more per dollar than the equivalent cash.
  • HECS-HELP repayments start above $69,528 (2026-27) and apply marginally at 15% then 17%, which is an extra deduction on a raise that many people fail to model.
  • Not-for-profit and public health employers can offer salary packaging of everyday expenses free of fringe benefits tax — worth thousands, and not available in the private sector.
