Our Mission

The most consequential financial decisions people make are almost always made with incomplete information. Generic "average cost" articles don't account for your state, your insurance, your income, or your family situation.

DecisionsCalc exists to close that gap — not with generic estimates, but with personalized, state-aware calculations built on primary government and academic data sources.

Our Principles

🔒

Your data stays yours

Every calculator runs 100% in your browser. We never transmit, store, or see the numbers you enter.

📊

Primary sources only

Every figure links to a named government agency, peer-reviewed study, or official survey — not another blog post.

🔄

Kept current

We update cost data and tax figures annually. Every article and calculator shows when it was last reviewed.

🚫

No ads, no affiliates

DecisionsCalc is free with no advertising, sponsored content, or affiliate links — so our data is never influenced by commercial relationships.

Methodology

How we build every calculator and article:

1
Identify the real cost components. We start with the full cost picture — including hidden items like opportunity cost, lost wages, and long-term compounding effects that most calculators ignore.
2
Source from primary data. Each input is tied to a named government survey (BLS, Census, IRS, CMS) or peer-reviewed publication. We note the survey year and update annually.
3
Validate against real-world ranges. Where possible, we cross-check averages against percentile distributions so users can see whether their situation is typical or outlier.
4
State-adjust where data allows. Cost of living, state tax rules, state-specific programs (paid leave, childcare subsidies, Medicaid rules) vary enormously. We incorporate state-level data wherever the underlying surveys support it.
